Tips for a Beautifully Decorated Christmas Tree!

It’s that time of year again! Christmas is upon us, and one of the best ways to bring the season into your home is by decorating a Christmas tree. Whether you’re going for traditional, trendy, or totally unique, here are some tips to make your tree a show-stopping centerpiece!

1. Pick a Theme

Choosing a theme helps guide your color scheme and ornament choices. Classic themes like red and green, or gold and silver, never go out of style. But if you’re feeling adventurous, consider something modern like blush and navy, Scandinavian simplicity, or a winter wonderland of white and silver. Or try a sentimental theme with vintage ornaments, family photos, or handmade decorations.

This year, trending themes include pastels, vintage Christmas (think old fashioned santas, bowls shaped like Santa pants etc), tinsel and luxe jewel tones.

2. Start with Lights

Lights should go on the tree first. Begin at the base and work your way up, wrapping lights around each branch to give depth and an even glow. A good rule of thumb is about 300 lights per metre of the tree for a fuller, brighter look.  Personally I love using a pre-lit tree and then if I have time I add extra lights.  When using a white light, select a warm white rather than cool for that beautiful soft glow.

3. Add Garland or Ribbon

Drape garlands, ribbon, or beads on the tree to add texture and dimension. You can wrap them around or cascade them vertically. Wired ribbon is especially easy to shape, allowing you to create loops or bows that add softness and elegance.  For a fuller look, try layering multiple elements like sprays and ribbons.

4. Ornaments: Big to Small

Start with larger ornaments first to establish structure and balance, filling in gaps in the branches. Then, add medium-sized ornaments to create layers and depth. Finally, add smaller ornaments to finish off the look. Don’t forget to tuck some ornaments inside the branches to add depth!

5. Special Ornaments and Sentimental Pieces

Add your personal touch by including ornaments that hold special memories. Whether it’s a handmade ornament, a family heirloom, or something from a special trip, these pieces make your tree uniquely yours.

6. The Tree Topper

The star, angel, or topper of your choice is the cherry on top! Make sure it fits your theme and scale.

7. Finish with a Tree Skirt or Collar

A tree skirt or collar gives a polished look and hides the base. Choose one that complements your theme—classic red, soft faux fur, or even a rustic burlap skirt.  I also like to place my tree on a small round rug for layering.

Bonus Tips:

  • Layer in scented pinecones or sprays of greenery for a fresh pine scent.
  • Add reflective ornaments like metallics and glass to catch the lights and add sparkle.
  • Step back frequently to check balance and symmetry as you decorate.
Decorating your tree is all about fun. So, gather some holiday tunes, a favourite drink, and make decorating the tree a memorable Christmas tradition. Have fun!
